The 1800s Male Figure (Nkisi Nkondi) with Nails and the 9-10th century Reliquary of Sainte Foy sculptures have several symbolic similarities as well as differences. Regarding, differences, while the Male Figure (Nkisi Nkondi) is associated with traditional polytheistic customs, the Reliquary of Sainte Foy figure relates to monotheistic customs. In addition, while the Male Figure (Nkisi Nkondi) encourages people to respect abstract deities, the Reliquary of Sainte Foy urges people to respect Sainte Foy  a human figure. The two artworks are however similar in that they inspire revered awe among people. All in all, the Reliquary of Sainte Foy and the Male Figure (Nkisi Nkondi) sculptures inspire deep awe in their respective societies through symbolism.

The Male Figure (Nkisi Nkondi) inspired sacred fear among Congo natives who took oaths before it, thus ensuring they would never err from their solemn. Conversely, the Reliquary of Sainte Foy inspired religious awe among religious faithful towards Sainte Foy. By beholding the majestic figure, peoples allegiance to God, who enabled Sainte Foy to perform miracles, increased (Hernando).

Moreover, the two artworks appealed to different aspects of the subjects lives. The Reliquary of Sainte Foy called upon subjects to consciously respect God through Sainte Foys acts. In contrast, the Male Figure (Nkisi Nkondi), owing to its sober appearance, inspired people to be obedient to the deities they took oaths before to avoid calamities.

In conclusion, the Reliquary of Sainte Foy and the Male Figure (Nkisi Nkondi) sculptures inspired great respect in people. The artworks are however different in that, while the Reliquary of Sainte Foy has monotheistic undertones, the Male Figure (Nkisi Nkondi) has polytheistic undertones.
